Durban University of Technology Fine Art (Department of Fine Art and Jewellery Design)

Durban, Corner Botanic Gardens and Steve Biko Roads

Since its beginnings in 1854, the Fine Art Department has been considered as one of the most innovative places to train for making a living through creativity. Highly qualified academic and support staff and excellent facilities underpin a teaching programme that develops each student's unique talents. The programme is designed to develop one's unique creative talent and understanding of the role art plays in the world through a variety of disciplines including drawing, painting, sculpture, print making and ceramics.
These courses are supplemented by modules of photography. Alongside the studio courses the study of Art Theory and Communication sets out to develop the students' understanding and familiarity with the traditions of art and the contemporary scene. Courses in Entrepreneurial Studies and Professional Practice prepare students for entry into the world of the working artist whether as exhibiting artist, craftsperson, community art officer, gallery curator, designer or teacher. All students are provided with the opportunity to serve the community through practical community work.
